To Part 1

David McNorris pulled up to the daycare center that DG had been working at for the past week. “Hey DG, you ready for lunch?” he asked as he walked in.

“Oh, hi, David, sure just let me grab my things. Meredith, David’s taking me to lunch. I’ll be back in an hour.” DG told her boss.

“Take two, Sweetheart. We don’t have that many kids today.” Meredith told her.

“Thanks, Mere. See you later. So, David, what fabulous restaurant are we going to today?” she asked him, smiling.

“Actually I thought we’d go have lunch at home. There was something I wanted to talk to you about.” David told her.

“Oh ok sure.”

The drive back to his house was quiet and they fixed lunch quietly as well. When they sat down he spoke. “DG, I don’t know what is about you but I’ve only know you a week and a half and I can’t stop thinking about you.”

“David,…”

“DG, I, uh, I was married before. And it ended, badly. I screwed up. I worked too much and drank too much. And I… had an affair.” He said not looking at her.

“Look at me. David, look at me.” He looked up. “Do you regret it? Wish you could do things differently?”

“Yes.”

“David, I need you to tell me the truth. How do you feel about me?”

David looked at DG. In the past week he’d been doing better at work and hadn’t even though about having a drink. Before she came along he felt like he was drowning. Now he felt like he could take on the world and win. “I think I’m falling in love with you, DG.”

DG smiled. “I was hoping you would say that. Do you want me, David? Do you want me to stay with you here and not return to my home?”

“Yes.” He said as he lifted her into his arms.

“Then I will. David, I want you. Take me upstairs.”

David carried DG up to his bedroom and laid her gently on his bed. “DG, are you sure about this?”

“Yes. This isn’t some one-time thing, David. I meant what I said. I’m not going back. I’m staying with you.” She said and pulled him down into a deep kiss.

Her hands pulled at his tie, loosening it and she pulled it off. She unbuttoned his shirt and pushed it and his suit jacket off of him. David pulled his tshirt off and tossed it to the floor. DG smiled at him and began removing her clothes. They just looked at each other for a moment before they tumbled together on the bed. He trailed his fingers across her forehead and smiled. Her hands roamed over his broad shoulders and over his back. He threaded his fingers through her hair as he leaned in to kiss her. She moaned lightly and he slipped his tongue past her parted lips, teasing and tasting. He trailed kisses along her cheek and down her neck nipping lightly at her shoulder. He continued to move down her body, taking one of her breasts in his mouth.

“David, more,” she whispered, threading her hands in his hair. His hands roamed her body, teasing her. He claimed her mouth again as his hand and knee slipped between her legs. He teased her and then slowly slid a finger into her. She moaned into his mouth, thrusting her hips against his hand. He added a second finger and watched her as she got closer to her peak.

“Feels good doesn’t it? You are so beautiful. And you sound so incredible. I want to watch you come, DG. Come for me,” he said in a low voice. He felt her body begin to shake and her muscles clench around his fingers, as she cried out his name when she came.

He kissed her again and crawled up her body. She whimpered at the loss of his hand and he smiled again. He positioned himself at her entrance and pressed in. She whispered his name again, asking for more and he pressed in further.

“David, please, stop teasing.”

“Yes, Ma’am.” Her whispered into her ear as he fully sheathed himself in her, groaning at the sensation. He pulled out to the tip then thrust back in to the hilt. He slid a hand down her side and down her leg lifting her leg up around his waist, repeating the action with the other leg. The change in positing increased the depth of his thrusts. He could feel her body tense beneath him. He pushed harder and faster and he felt he begin to quake.

“Unh, DAVID!” DG cried as she came around him and her magic flared. Her hands clutched at his back as her grunted his own release within her.

They laid there in bed, DG’s head on David’s chest tucked up under his chin. He trailed his hand over her back drawing lazy patterns with his fingers. “I haven’t felt this good in a long time DG. You make me want to be a better man.”

“David, that’s the sweetest thing anyone has ever said to me. You know if I’m not going home I’m going to have to get…” DG was cut off when David’s phone rang.

“McNorris… Yes, he what? … Has he been booked? … Good. … No, cut him loose. I’m at my house send him here. … Yes, I’m sure. Damn it, Hechler, just do it. … Thank you. … Don’t worry about her, she’s here with me. … That’s none of your damn business! … Tell Joel and Fearless, I want them around just in case. … No, I’m not expecting trouble I just want to err on the side of caution. … Thanks bye.” David hung up and set the phone on the bedside table.

“What was that?” DG asked.

“It looks like Mr. Cain is on his way. Ray and Tom picked him up on a weapons charge. He was carrying an old six-shooter without a permit.”

DG laughed. “Idiot, Tin Man.”

“What?”

“Oh, um, nothing. I’m going to take a quick shower. I’ll meet you downstairs.” She kissed him deeply then slid out of bed.

A little while later David was in the kitchen cleaning up from lunch when DG came in and sat at the table. She was fresh out of the shower and her still damp hair hung in tendrils, framing her face. David thought she looked like an angel.

“Ah there you are I was just about to go check on you. Meredith called while you were in the shower. She said that a few of the parents picked up their kids early and you could take the rest of the day off,” he told her.

“That’s nice. Hey cool, three-day weekend!” DG said smiling.

“I already called the office. I took the rest of the day as well. I figured we’d need it with Mr. Cain on his way here. DG, can we talk? There’s something I need to ask you.”

“Of course, David.”

“DG, I have to confess that when I first met you my pessimism won out over my better judgment. I looked up your file.”

“I thought you might. It’s not a big deal, David. I wouldn’t expect you to share your home with someone without thoroughly checking them out first.”

“Thank you for understanding. But I have to admit that there are some things that didn’t quite add up.”

DG heart jumped. She knew he was good but this good?

“DG, there was no hospital birth record for you. In fact there were no records on you at all until age six. Then six months ago you disappear after a tornado hits your house and then you show up here in LA 2 weeks ago. Where were you for those six months? And why are there no records on you before age six?”

“Oh David, I knew you were good, but I had hoped you would not ask me those questions.”

“I’d like to have them answered, DG.”

“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”

“Try me. I’d believe a hell of a lot from you.”

DG sighed. “What if I told you that some tornados aren’t just regular tornados; they can take you to another place? A place called The OZ, The Outer Zone.”

He laughed a little but stopped when he saw the look of complete seriousness on her face. “You’re not joking.”

“No, I’m not. I’m from The OZ, David. I was born there. Something terrible happened when I was a little girl and I was sent here to protect me.”

“Ok, so you are from this OZ.” he said skeptically.

“Yes. But there’s more.” She said. “I can use magic.”

“Magic? Like real magic?”

“Yes.” She said as she transformed a paper napkin into a picture of her friends and showed it to him.

“Wow. That’s… wow.”

“David, those missing six months I was back in the OZ trying to save my world from total destruction. You believe me. Don’t you?”

David sat next to her and took her hands in his, looking into her eyes. “Yes, DG, I believe you. How could I not especially after what you showed me. You didn’t have to do that you know.”

“I know. But you are a cynic, David. You have to be shown incontrovertible evidence of the truth.” DG told him smiling. “Look David, there’s…”

DG was cut off when there was a loud pounding on the front door. “Well that’s either Mr. Cain or Fearless.” David stood to get the door when his phone rang. He looked back at DG. “I’ll get the phone, you get the door?”

“Sure,” she said as she stood. She kissed him and then walked to the door. DG listened as David answered his phone.

“McNorris. … Fearless. … No, I’m not really expecting trouble, but I just don’t want to take the risk. … Yeah, yeah, laugh it up, but there is just something about this girl. … Alright, around the corner is fine. I’ll call if we need you.” He hung up and watched DG open the door.

“Hello, Mr. Cain. Please come in.” She said calmly. He followed her into the living room while David finished putting up the dishes from lunch.

“It’s good to see you DG. You have no idea how worried I was when I heard what had happened. So if you go get your stuff we can go home.” Cain said as he moved closer to her.

“I’m not going, Cain,” she said as she sat down.

“What do you mean you’re not going? This isn’t a time for games, DG. The queen sent me here to bring you home and that is what I am going to do. Now get you things, Princess.” Cain said sternly.

“No, Cain, I’m staying here. I have no reason to want to go home. Not after what you said to me.”

“DG, I’m sorry. You caught me off guard and I lashed out. I didn’t mean it.” Cain sighed. “The truth is I care about you, Kiddo. I care a lot more than I should. I’m still healing, you know that, I just need some time.” He said as he moved closer to her.

“You broke my heart, Cain. I told you that I was falling for you and you called me a foolish child that couldn’t tell the difference between love and hero worship. It was mean and heartless, Tin Man. So I’m staying here with David.

“David? Who in Ozma’s name is David?” Cain asked.

“I am.” David said standing in the doorway of the kitchen.

Cain turned and looked at David and took an involuntary step back. “What in the hells is going on? Is this some kind of joke? What did you do, spell him to look like me?”

“I did nothing of the sort, Tin Man. This is David McNorris, my friend, and…” she trailed off as she locked eyes with him. “Maybe more?”

David smiled and nodded as he crossed the room and took DG in his arms. Cain stood the in shock for a moment before he began pacing the room. “Damn it, Princess. I was sent to bring you home. The Queen will not be pleased if I return without you.”

“I’m sorry, Tin Man, you’re just going to have to explain it to her Majesty that her little Princess is very happy right where she is.” DG stated from where she was tucked into David’s arms.

“DG, why do you keep calling him Tin Man?” David asked.

“It’s what he is. A Tin Man. That’s what we call police in the OZ,” she told him.

“And the references to the Queen and him calling you Princess?”

“That was the one thing I didn’t get a chance to tell you.”

“DG, what have you been telling him?” Cain asked.

“Everything, I’ve told him everything.” She turned to David. “David, the Outer Zone is ruled by a monarchy. My mother is the current Queen. Queen Lavender. That makes me Princess Dorothy Gale of the Outer Zone.”

“You’re a princess, an honest to God princess?” David asked her.

“Yes, I am, David.”

“You’d give it all up to stay with me?” David sounded like he was in shock.

“Yes, my sister is the Heir Apparent and I just seem to always be in the way. Here I have you and Teresa, Fearless, Joel and his family, and Tom. I have friends here. I’m happy.”

Cain sat watching his anger and pain at losing her boiling over. “This isn’t negotiable, DG. I am taking you home to the OZ. That’s how it has to be. You can’t stay here. You don’t know these people, DG. I’m taking you home.” Cain stood and took DG by the wrist.

David took his phone out and called Fearless. “Fearless, McNorris. Remember what I asked you? … Yes, thank you.”

In no time flat Joel and Fearless walked in to David’s house and faced off with Cain. “Let go of her.” Fearless said.

Cain looked around. He knew he was out numbered and there was no way he was going to risk DG getting hurt. He let go of DG and she immediately went to David’s side and he wrapped an arm around her.

“You ok, Spitfire?” Joel asked.

“I’m fine, Joel. Cain just takes his job too seriously. Look Cain, I like it here. I like these people and I love David. I don’t want to go back.” DG said.

“DG, The Zone needs you. Az may have been the Heir apparent but she’s not getting any better you know that. This isn’t a matter of what we want DG. I screwed up and blew my chance, that’s fine. But you still need to come home.” Cain said.

Joel and Fearless looked at him oddly then looked from David to DG who both nodded. Then Fearless’ phone rang and he and Joel left leaving Cain with David and DG once again.

“David, is it ok if he stays?” David nodded. “OK, Cain, go upstairs second door on the right, take a shower and get some rest, we’ll talk later.”

David sat heavily on the couch.

“If Cain’s on the level about Az then I’m going to have to go back. I promised her I wouldn’t run away again. My coming here was an accident.” DG said as she sat and curled into David’s side.

“I don’t want to lose you, but I have no right to ask you to stay. ” He said standing and offering her his hand. She took it and he helped her to her feet. He led her up stairs to his bedroom.

“I don’t want to lose you either,” she said quietly as she closed the door behind them.

“Did you mean it, DG? When you said you loved me? I mean are you sure that it’s not because I look like him? You did say you had feelings for him.”

“He crushed those feelings when he said those horrible things. I meant it, David, I love you.”

“How can you say that? You don’t know who I am, what I’ve done. I’m not a nice man, DG.”

“Sit down, David,” DG told him. He sat on his bed and she sat next to him. “I don’t need to know everything about you. You already told me about your ex-wife and that you cheated and about your drinking problem. I’m sure that caused a lot of problems with your work.”

“It did. I wasn’t sure if I’d even have a job when I got out of rehab. But I knew things had to change. I just don’t see how you can love me so quickly.”

“I’m not sure that I understand it either. All those feeling that I had for Cain are gone. It feels like every bit of my magic is screaming and reaching out to you, to claim you and be claimed by you. I can’t explain it David I just know that you are the one that I want.”

David caressed Dg face pushing her hair behind her ear. “I love you.”

DG leaned into his touch and placed a hand on his chest. “Make love to me, David.”

David smiled as he pulled her tshirt off over her head and tossed it away. DG pulled off her bra as David stripped off his shirt and undershirt. He kicked off his shoes as DG unbuckled his belt and unbuttoned and unzipped his pants pushing them and his boxers to the floor. He climbed on the bed and laid her down. He ran his hands over her body before popping the button and unzipping her jeans. She lifted her hips so that he could pull them and her panties off of her. He kissed her deeply as he slid his hands up and down her body.

“I love the way you feel, DG. I could spend forever just touching you.” She whimpered as he spoke, one hand on her breast and the other toying with her clit between her legs. “You make the most beautiful sounds. I enjoy hearing the effect I have on you. It’s more intoxicating than anything I could ever drink.” DG cried out as he sank two fingers into her depths, keeping a slow, steady pace.

“David, now, please.” DG moaned.

David smiled as he pulled his hand from her and thrust himself into her. She met his thrusts, giving him everything as she wrapped one leg around him. He kisses her and nibbled at her neck as he rolled them over. He looked up at her and caught her gaze. “Ride me, DG.”

DG braced herself against him, hands splayed over his shoulders as she rocked her body against him. He grasped her hips and push up into her making her whimper and moan. Her body began to tremble and he felt her muscles begin to clench around him. David pulled her down against him hard and she cried out her release as he groaned with his own. “You are mine, DG. I’m never letting you go,” he told her as he tucked her against his side and pulled the blankets over them.

“Are you mine, David?”

“Yes. I’m yours, DG, for as long as you’ll have me.”

“How does forever sound, David McNorris?”

“Like heaven, Dorothy Gale. DG, I didn’t get the impression that Cain was lying about your sister. Your world needs you, but so do I. This being the case I can see only one solution. I’m going with you.”

“David, you can’t. This is your world. You’re the DDA, you have friends and people that count on you. I can’t take you away from all that. Besides what will happen if the Deputy District Attorney just doesn’t show up?”

“I’ll resign. I’ll talk to Fisher tomorrow and then I’ll be free to go with you.” He said as he caressed her cheek.

“Are you sure?”

“I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life, DG. This is what I want to do.”

“Ok, let’s go tell Cain.”

Later that evening after dinner they told Cain that DG would go back to the OZ.

“That’s good DG. We can leave as soon as you’re ready. Your mother gave me this device that Glitch put together, says it will summon a storm.” Cain told her.

“We’re not leaving tonight, Cain. We’ll leave tomorrow evening, there are some things that need to be taken care of first. And David is coming with me.”

“No way, DG. He can’t come.” Cain was fuming.

“He’s coming, Cain that’s all there is to it. My magic has already started to bond with him. You have no say in the matter.”

“Fine DG, but your mother and father are not going to like it.” Cain relented.

The next day David barged into Ben Fisher’s office.

“David, ever heard of calling first? What do you need?” Fisher asked.

“I’m just here to give you this.” David handed the paper to Fisher.

“You’re resigning? David, what’s this about?” Fisher asked.

“It doesn’t matter what it’s about. The fact of the matter is that I am resigning effective immediately and as soon as I pack up my office I am leaving LA.” David told him.

“Can I change your mind?” Fisher asked.

“No, Ben, you can’t. Things have to change and I am not going to be your ‘Fixer’. That’s all there is to it. So long Ben.” David walked out and headed to his office to start packing things up.

He looked up at the knock on his door. “Andrea. What are you doing here?”

“I wanted to see how you were.”

“I’m fine, Andrea. Actually, I’m better than fine. I feel great. Better than I have in a long time.” He said as he continued to pack things away.

“That’s great. What are you doing?” she asked.

“I am packing up my office.”

“I can see that. Why?”

“Because, I resigned. I ‘m leaving.”

“Leaving…”

“Yes, Andrea, I’m leaving. I’m leaving the DA’s office and I’m leaving LA.” He said as he put the last of the things that he wanted to keep in the box. He left hi keys on the desk and started to walk out. She followed him.

“Where are you going to go?”

“Does it really matter? I’m leaving, that’s all you need to know.” He put the box in the trunk of his car and opened the driver’s side door. “I wish you the best, Miss Little. Be happy.” He got in the car and drove away. On the way back to his house he stopped at the station.

“Fearless.” He called when he saw him in the hallway.

“McNorris what are you doing here?”

“Fearless, I need you to do something for me.” He pulled an envelope out of his jacket pocket. “This is all the paperwork on my house and my car. I signed them both over to you. Keep them sell them I don’t care. I’m leaving LA with DG tonight so I don’t have time to sell them.”

“Leaving? What? Where?” Fearless was speechless.

“It doesn’t matter. Tell Hechler and Joel I said thanks for everything.” With that David McNorris left the station for the last time.

By the time David made it back to his house it was starting to get late. He packed up a few things that he wanted to keep with him into two duffle bags and then he, DG and Cain left for an open field. Cain summoned the storm with Glitch’s device and David held DG securely in his arms.

“Are you ready?” she asked.

“I’m with you, that’s all I need,” he told her. They closed their eyes and he kissed her soundly as the storm picked them up and took them to their new life together in The OZ.

DG woke with a splitting head ache. ‘What happened?’ she thought. The last thing she remembered was getting picked up by a Wild Travel Storm on the way to Finaqua.

“Oh, no, where am I?” she groaned.

“Miss? Miss, can you hear me?” a strong tenor voice called to her.

DG slowly opened her eyes and took in her surroundings. Great she was in the hospital. Well at least that explains the headache. She must have hit her head when the storm dropped her.

“Miss, I’m Officer Hechler. This is my partner, Officer Turcotte. Can you tell us your name?”

“DG. Oh, um that is, Dorothy Gale. Where am I?” she asked.

“You’re in the hospital,” Turcotte told her.

DG gave him her best Princess glare. “No, shit, Sherlock. I meant what city.”

“You don’t know what city you are in?” Hechler asked.

DG shook her head. Hechler sent Turcotte to get a doctor. “You’re in Los Angles, Miss Gale.”

‘Oh no. They’ll never find me. It’ll take months to track all the wild storms. Oh, what am I going to do?’ DG thought.

The doctor came and examined DG. He couldn’t find anything wrong and said that short term memory loss was not uncommon with a head injury. Hechler and Turcotte asked her if she needed anything or if there was needed or anyone she wanted to call. She told them that she had lost her IDs and asked if they could get her replacements. They said they’d look into it and then they left her.

“Great. I’m alone in the middle of LA and I have no idea how long it’s going to take for mom Az and Glitch to track the storm that took me. Damn it! Why didn’t I wait for Cain like he wanted me to?

Cain paced in the front entrance of Finaqua. DG was late. She should have been here before him. He gave up pacing when he heard Glitch yelling. Cain ran toward the sound and found the queen, Azkadellia and Glitch in the queen’s office all hunched over maps and charts.

“What’s happened? Why isn’t DG here?” He asked as he entered.

“Ah, Mr. Cain you’ve arrived. We have discovered that DG was picked up by a Wild Travel Storm.” The queen informed him.

Cain stared at her for a moment. “What?!”

“Calm down Cain. We’ve already started tracking her magic and she’s only been gone for a couple of hours. We should have her by late tonight or the morning at the latest.” Glitch told him.

Cain stormed out of the office and down the hall not caring that the door slammed shut behind him. Jeb watched as Cain stalked past him and hurried to catch up.

“Dad. Dad, wait.” He called. Cain slowed down and let Jeb catch up with him. “What’s wrong?”

“I just found out that DG has been swept off to the OtherSide by a Wild Travel storm. They are tracking her now but she could be anywhere. And who knows if time there is the same as time here?”

“Dad you have to calm down. Getting hysterical isn’t going to help DG. Look, it’s already getting late, go get some rest I’m sure they’ll have her located by morning, and then we’ll go get her. She’ll be ok, Dad. She knows how to get by over there.”

“I know, son. Good night, Jeb.”

“Night, dad.”

Several days later DG was released from the hospital. Hechler and Turcotte picked her up and took her to the station to pick up her replacement IDs. DG was running to keep up when she suddenly found herself of the floor after running into some one. DG scrambled to her feet.

“Oh, God, I’m so sorry I was trying to catch up with Hechler and Turcotte and I totally wasn’t watching where I was…” she trailed off as she looked up into familiar Ice blue eyes. “Cain!!!” she threw her arms around his neck. “Oh god, I didn’t think you guys would find me so fast.”

“Miss, I think you have me mistaken for someone else,” he said.

DG stepped back and looked at him. As she took in his appearance she was able to see the differences. There was still a hardness in his eyes but it was different and not tempered by the happiness of Cain’s reunion with Jeb. He was dressed in a very nice suit and did not carry himself like her Tin Man. She backed away from him. “You’re not Wyatt.”

“No, Ma’am, my name is David McNorris. I’m the Deputy District Attorney.”

DG backed up again. “Oh, I’m really very sorry Mr. McNorris. I really should have been watching where I was going.”

“It’s alright, no harm done, miss…” he prompted her for her name.

DG was about to answer when Turcotte and Hechler showed up. “Oh there you are DG, we were wondering where you got off to.” Turcotte said.

“Sorry, Tom, I had a little accident. I ran into the brick wall you all call a DDA.” DG said as she moved further away from David.

“Oh hey, McNorris. Well look, DG, we got your ID’s but we’re still trying to find you a place to stay. And the woman that owns the daycare center next door said that you can start as soon as you feel up to it,” Turcotte told her.

“Thank you, Tom. I can just get a hotel room or something. It’s only till my family gets here anyway.” DG said.

“You don’t have a place to stay?” David asked. Damn it why was he even getting involved. Walk away, David. Just walk away, he told himself. Still there was something about this girl. She radiated strength and confidence but she still made him feel like she needed to be protected and cared for. Do not get involved, McNorris, his long dormant conscience screamed.

“Well I kind of got stranded here and I lost everything so I’m kinda out of luck.” DG told him. “Anyway it was nice to meet you and I’m sorry I ran into you like that.”

DG, Turcotte and began to walk away. David groaned. Why was he doing this and why couldn’t he stop himself. “Wait.” He called. Hechler, Turcotte and DG stopped and turned. “There’s two empty rooms at my house. You’re more that welcome to one. For as long as you need.”

“Oh thank you but I don’t want to bother you.” Dg said quickly. It would be way too weird to live in the same house as a man that looked exactly like Wyatt Freakin’ Cain. It was bad enough that she had been developing feelings for the Tin Man.

“Really it’s no bother. The house is big and empty and I’d appreciate the company.” Why are you doing this, McNorris? This girl is only going to cause you trouble.

“Well, if you’re sure it’s no bother, thank you.” DG smiled and went off with Turcotte to pick up her ID’s.

“McNorris, What the hell are you up to?” Hechler asked.

“I have no idea. I couldn’t say no to her. There’s something about her. Who is she?” David asked.

“Her name’s Dorothy Gale.”

David looked at him strangely. "You're kidding. A girl like that and her name is Dorothy?"

“Well, she goes by DG. Still it is pretty old fashioned.” Hechler said agreeing. He saw the thoughtful look on David’s face. “Don’t.”

“What?”

“Whatever you are thinking McNorris, don’t. She’s a nice girl and the last thing she needs is to get tangled up with you.”

“I know that. Believe me, I know that…”

Cain was furious. A week. It had been a week and they still hadn’t found DG. Cain was currently stomping down the hall toward the queen’s office to request that they just send him in a travel storm to Kansas and he would start his search there. He entered and made his request.

“And just how do you expect to find her once your there?” The queen asked.

“The old fashioned way. Look. If she’s not there then where ever she is she will have to have gotten her ID’s replaced and that will leave a trail. That’s where I’ll start.” He said frustrated.

The queen smiled softly and offered him a seat. When he sat she spoke softly. “Mr. Cain… Wyatt, I understand your desire to see DG home safely. I realize that you are developing feelings for her, and that fuels your need to find her. We have her location narrowed down to the west coast of the United States. If you can be patient few a few more days we will have that narrowed down even further. Please, Wyatt. We can’t have you wandering around on the other side with no direction.”

Cain growled and scrubbed a hand over his face. “I’ll give it one more week. Then you send me to Kansas I try to get a lead from that Sherriff there.”

“Thank you, Wyatt.” Cain stood to leave. “Oh and Wyatt, when you find DG I suggest you tell her how you feel about her. It may make her more apt to wait to travel with you in the future.” Cain pulled his hat further down over his eyes and walked out of the office.

David McNorris sat in his office staring at his computer. Part of him wanted to look the girl up and find out everything he could the other part wanted to just let it go. In the end his pessimism won out. The girl had a file in some rinky-dink little town in Kansas, nothing major a few speeding tickets and parking violations. Wait a minute, this was interesting. A tornado hit her house six months ago and she and her parents had been missing ever since. Odd. And now the girl just shows up in LA out of the clear blue? Where has she been for six months, and where are her parents? David printed out the pages and put them in his briefcase and snapped it shut. He had to go pick up the girl. This should be interesting.

He pulled up to the station and parked. Why was he doing this? What was it about this girl? He walked in and saw that DG was waiting for him.

“I really appreciate you doing this for me, Mr. McNorris. You didn’t have to.” DG said as they walked out the door.

“Really, Miss Gale, it’s the least I can do. And please, call me David.” He said smiling.

DG laughed. “Alright, David, then you must call me DG.”

“Well then DG, are you ready to go?”

“Yes, I could use a nap.” DG said smiling as David opened his car door for her and then got his the driver’s seat. The drive to his house was quiet and when he pulled in the drive way he glanced over at her and saw that she had fallen asleep.

She is beautiful, he thought. Stop it David. Do not get involved you don’t need this right now, he told himself. He got out of the car and opened his front door then carefully lifted DG and carried her inside and up to the guest room across form his own room. He covered her with a blanket and couldn’t stop himself from gently stroking a hand through her raven hair and away from her face. This girl is going to cause me trouble if I’m not careful, he told himself as he went back out to the car for his briefcase. He sat heavily in his chair in the den and pulled the file on DG out of his case again. He had the papers spread all over his desk. There were no records on the girl before age 6, no doctor’s reports, immunization records, hospital birth record, nothing. She was an average student and seemed gifted in art and mechanics. She worked at the Hilltop Café for a few years. Then six months ago after an out of season tornado she and her parents disappear. Things just weren’t adding up. He was going to have to talk to DG.

David decided to wait until she was comfortable around him and him house before he asked her about the missing six months. Something told him he wasn’t going to like the answer. She woke up and came down for dinner they ordered a pizza since that was what DG had said that she wanted. He watched as she ate the pizza and drained the can of Coke he had given her. He couldn’t help but smile at the sheer joy on her face as he set another Coke in front of her.

“So, DG, if you don’t mind my asking, who is this Cain fellow you mistook me for?” He asked.

DG froze. “Wyatt Cain. He’s difficult to explain. He’s a friend and kind of my protector.”

David was getting the feeling that there was a little more to it than that but let it slide. “Why did you think I was him?”

DG looked thoughtful for a moment then the transformed the napkin in her hand into a picture of the Tin Man. “Well, because this is Wyatt.” She said as she laid the picture on the table.

David picked it up and looked at it. He nearly choked when he saw that he was looking at his doppelganger. “My, God! What… how…?”

“Yeah, now you know why I was so shocked to see you. I know you’re not him. It’s pretty clear that you haven’t been though what he has but you do have a similar hardness and pain in your eyes. You’ve been hurt.” DG said.

“I’d say that’s a story for another time, DG. It’s getting late. You should get to bed.” David said. Damn the girl was perceptive.

“Um, David, I don’t have anything to sleep in. Let alone wear tomorrow.” DG said looking at her plate.

“I’ll see if I can find you something. I’ll be back.” David left and came back after a few minutes with an oversized tshirt and a pair of cotton shorts. “I thought this would be good enough for tonight then you can wash your clothes while I’m at work tomorrow. I’ll take you to get some things after I get back.”

DG took the clothes and smiled at him. “Thank you David. Goodnight.” DG paused in front of him for a moment then went up to her room. Oh, god, I almost kissed him, she thought. I don’t even know him. Ok, Deeg, it’s ok. It was just cause he looks so much like Cain. But he’s so different; the way he moves, and speaks is so much different than Cain. DG yawned as she changed. For the first time in a long time her mind was not on Wyatt Cain as she crawled into bed and fell asleep.

Another week had passed and they had finally tracked DG to Los Angeles, CA. Cain had no idea what to expect but he knew that he had to be careful. He picked up the package that the queen had given him. Id and money were going to get him through. Cain made his way to the south garden where they were waiting to create that travel storm. He had been told that the storm would set him down just outside the city. He heard someone running up behind him and stopped.

“Dad! Wait!” Jeb yelled.

“What is it, Jeb?” Cain asked.

“I’m going with you.”

“No, you’re not. This is not pleasure trip Jeb, the idea is to go in, find her and bring her home.”

“I know that dad. I just thought that another pair of eyes could help.”

“Jeb, I know you want to help. But I want you to stay here, stay safe. DG’s already in danger and I couldn’t concentrate on my job if something happened to you too.” He said placing a hand on his son’s shoulder. “I’ll try to make this trip as quick as I can. You are in charge until I get back.”

Jeb hugged his father quickly then gave him a sharp salute. “You can count on me, dad.”

Cain smiled. “I know. I’ll see you in a few days.” Jeb went back inside and Cain continued to the garden. Cain looked up at the balcony where the queen and Azkadellia were waiting. He shoved his hat into his pack then nodded and they summoned the storm. Cain closed his eyes as the storm took him.

When he opened his eyes again he looked around at where he was. The city was huge. Maybe he should have brought Jeb with him. Still he knew where to start. If she had been dropped by as wild storm it was likely that she had gotten hurt in the landing. Someone had to have taken her to the hospital and then to the authorities to replace her Id’s. Cain pulled his hat out and settled it on his head as he started walking.

Hechler and Turcotte were on their way back to the station when they saw Cain. Turcotte had to do a double take when he saw him. “Hey, Ray, check that out.” He said drawing his partner’s attention to Cain.

“Wow, think he’s some reject from a cowboy flick?” Hechler asked.

“Who knows?” Turcotte replied as the wind blew Cain’s duster back letting his revolver be seen. “Ray?”

“I see it.” He said as he hit the lights and siren. They pulled up in front of Cain and stopped. They turned the siren off but left the lights flashing. “Sir, I’m going to have to ask you to stay right where you are.”

Cain took in the officers that had approached him. They hadn’t drawn their weapons but they were being cautious. “Of course. What can I do for you gentlemen?”

“Well first you can show us some Id then you can show us your permit for that six-shooter at your side.” Hechler said.

Cain tipped his hat back and the two officers took a startled step back as they got a good look at his face. Cain pulled out the ID that the queen created for him and handed it to the younger of the two but he didn’t have a permit for the revolver and that concerned him. He knew what was going to happen next. He shrugged off his duster and pulled off his gunbelt and laid it on the ground. He took a step back. “I’m afraid that I don’t have a permit for it. Where I’m from I didn’t need one.”

“Sir, I’m afraid you’re going to have to come with us.” Hechler said as he picked up Cain’s gun.

“Yes, I thought so. I assume you want my pack and coat as well?”

“Yes. What are you doing around here anyway? No offence, but you look a little out of place.”

“I was sent to look for someone. She went missing about 2 weeks ago and her mother is very worried about her.” Cain told them figuring that telling them mostly the truth would be the best way to go.

“What do you do that you don’t need a permit for that six-shooter of yours?” He asked Cain as he opened the back door of the patrol car.

“I work private security for a Princess.”

“Ah, spoiled rich brat huh?”

“Something like that.” Cain said smirking. “I have a picture of the girl I’m looking for. It’s in my pack.”

Hechler tossed Cain’s things to Turcotte and they got in the car and drove back to the station. Once there they looked for the picture that he had told them about. “Tom, I found the picture.” Hechler said showing it to him.

“Damn. Think he’s for real?”

“I don’t know but we better call McNorris.”
